MY ANGLE… ON DORA AKUNYILI

09 Jun

The first time I watched Dora speak, I knew I was watching a rare individual! She was obviously not uttering empty words and everything she said, came from a well spring of passion, conviction, care and vision.

I’m not about to explain to you her biography because that is something that can easily be accessed through the internet. However, I want to highlight some few things her life has reflected and some other things worthy of note.

I’ve always admired her courage and Zeal and because I’m a person of integrity and truth, I found an easy connection with what she was up to, especially during her times as the Director General of NAFDAC.

However, when she moved in as the Minister for information, sincerely at that point, I couldn’t relate the previous and present assignment. Yet, I respected her person, her abilities and a rare gift that she is, to our country at large.

When I sighted her picture at the National Conference, being Shocked is a very mild word to use. I was dumb founded!
I couldn’t understand the nature of a sickness that will turn a 59 old robust and beautiful woman, to an 85 years old woman in less than a year!

I saw the emaciated frame, the hands, the clothes that seemed to hang loosely on her and I knew this was a heavy one!

However, she was able to calm the Nigerian populace down including myself, when she said she was now fit.

I believed and expected that in a matter of months, her flesh might possibly add up since she was on the path of recovery.

Soon, we heard there was an emergency and she had to be flown to India. At that point, I still maintained faith and said my own words of prayer in my little space!

What initiated this write-up?
My believe in Dora and hopefully, to be able to re-organise the mentality of some people who have a dangerous, careless and selfish way of reasoning and analysing situations.

I have been reading a lot on Dora, her condition and after death from credible sources. However, having watched an interview she granted to the anchor of a programme… Our Ladies, Our Pride on AIT yesterday, I was moved to pick up my pen to write!

Dora started on the path of integrity right from her growing up years and as a young wife who was not concerned about just herself and family but how to bring a change into the lives of the average Nigerian, not for fame, not for gain, but for the love of humanity. This, I can relate perfectly with!

So many people can see the fruits a tree produces but can not determine the depth of its foundation. Friends, Dora had a depth! That depth was rooted in her love for people. It will be murder to wish that kind of women dead!

Driven by love and the desire to sustain and preserve life, she moved women to build an hospital from the remains of a dilapidated building in her state and not even her own village. She went further to talk with men to donate in other to equip the hospital. She was eventually able to build and furnish a standard hospital which could cater for the medical issues of the average man, woman and child!

It was from there, she continued to narrate how she moved ahead in her career, being recommended at various points for various positions of representation for her state, moved to PTF and from where she was able to refund the money meant for a supposed surgery abroad which acted as a springboard for being re-called and remembered for a position that was highly lobbied for… The Director General of NAFDAC.

I’m saving us a lot of details so I could go straight to the one point…

Her integrity got her a dignified and competitive position though not for relaxation and fame but for work and the truth be told… DORA WORKED AND GAVE IT HER BEST SHOT!

A GREAT LESSON I WANT US ALL TO HOLD TIGHTLY TO IS THAT…

LIVING A LIFE OF INTEGRITY AND TRUTH IS NOT SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE POSTPONED TO A LATER DATE BUT SHOULD BE STARTED NOW!

THE IMPRESSIONS WE MAKE IN THE MINDS AND LIVES OF PEOPLE OVER THE YEARS IS WHAT WILL BE CONSULTED IF WE MUST BE ELEVATED IN THE PRESENT!

THE WAY WE LIVE OUR LIVES PRESENTLY IS SO SENSITIVE THAT WE CANNOT AFFORD TO OVERLOOK IT AND THROW IT’S GOLDEN OPPOURTUNITY AWAY.

Our records with men is what will speak for us!

Remember the story of Daniel? He was not at the kings palace when his destiny was being determined but someone spoke up about him!

Our past deeds will always speak for us when we are not there and so, its HIGHLY IMPORTANT that we live and lead a responsible and integrity laced life. It has the power to give you what others struggle for!

Dora went ahead to build on her previous works and didn’t relent nor misuse the power and authority she was given.

Who knows how many lives Dora had indirectly saved by her aggressive attack on all those that manufactured, bought and sold fake drugs to innocent and ignorant Nigerians?

She might have saved you!
She might have saved me!

I have some terrible knowledge of the reality of these fake drugs but I’d rather not go into it here.

Well, it was time for Dora to leave, having done her job well and escaping various threats of death and direct attack. She was determined to finish and finish she did!

The further question is this… At what point did Dora miss it?

Was it going in as the Minister for information or even attempting the NAFDAC appointment?

Was it contesting alongside Ngige?

If she had been silent after NAFDAC appointment, would she be alive and well and still with us today?

Well, I can’t say because I’m not God! And as long as we live, there will be unanswered questions because we are still mortals!

Yes, she MIGHT have been preserved but yet, many lives that could have been saved will be lost!

DORA’S LIFE LIKE JESUS I BELIEVE, WAS THE SOWING OF A SEED FOR AN HARVEST!

However, so many people have made various comments, part of which was a comment by a man that Dora should have shut up! Shut up for what? He felt she was too outspoken and so she was cut short.

Well, my question is this… What of those that have been so quiet but yet, were killed by jealous and envious men? Many examples abound that I can’t go into, for lack of time to do so.

ONE THING AMONGST OTHERS, THAT WE NEED TO REALISE IS THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE ON THE OFFENSIVE BEFORE THE ENEMY STRIKES! WHETHER YOU’RE DEFENSIVE, OFFENSIVE OR JUST THERE… WE ARE ALL FIGHTING A COMMON ENEMY WHO IS IN A BATTLE FOR OUR SOULS!!!

However, the Lord has assured us in His word that we should not be afraid of those that can kill the body but cannot kill the soul, which I believe Dora very well knew, believed and lived!!!

Another dirty comment I came across was someone saying that she was greedy and that what was she looking for at the National conference when she knew her present state of health?

Well…

What if…

What if she had spent all she had and just needed money to pay her bills???

What if she knew she won’t make it and just wanted to seize the last chance to contribute her quota to the current devastatIng situations Nigeria has found herself in??? Truth be told, Dora had a deep rooted passion for her country Nigeria even in the face of her ill health!

She said it.. That all through her years in school, she had enjoyed scholarships from the Federal Government of Nigeria and because of that, she felt compelled to serve her mother land.

Have we also thought of the fact that Dora did not consider her frail body and what the world will say about her emaciated body?

Don’t we think that she might have been advised not to make a public appearance because I tell you, women really bother about their looks without exceptions from a public figure like her?

What if she ignored that and considered that the need to air her voice the last time meant the whole world to her???

My People, if we don’t have any good thing to say about this woman who lived her life saving lives, let’s be still and stay quiet! It will even save our own lives!

Could it be she disobeyed God at some point?
Why was she not healed since she was a devoted Christian?
What exactly made us loose such a brilliant, compassionate and hardworking woman who has achieved a lot to include over a thousand awards both locally and internationally?

These and many more are questions that might have crossed our minds.

However, in the absence of answers, we can be knowledgeable about the fact that…

1. Professor Dora Akunyili has achieved in a lifetime what a man or woman of 100 years might not achieve.

2. Her existence has blessed and saved the lives of multitudes and generations unborn!

3. She lived a life of integrity and the lessons are still here for us to learn from forever!

She made her exit at 59 but there is assurance for those who slept in Christ (regardless of the manner they made their exit), that they will reign with him on the last day.

We take comfort in the book of 1Thessalonians 4:13-17…

“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”

DORA NKEM AKUNYILI… Sleep on till the final judgement and crowning.
Well done!
Thank you for giving life your best shot!

So what are you waiting for if you’re not a born Again Christian yet???????????????

Life is a bunch of waste no matter how long you live and even your good deeds if you do not know Christ nor have a working relationship with him.

Make your confessions today and you’ve just succeeded in securing your eternity!!!

Please take a step further, share this if it has added anything positive to you.

Thank you.
With deep Love,
Bukola Adeolu ‘Dele

Very profound piece Bukola, watched that interview ‘…our pride’,recently too and really had more respect for her. I really appreciate this write up how you were able to summarised this woman’s life. I must say I wondered why she appeared at the Confab but I share your thoughts that she probably wanted to let out her voice even ‘for the last time’. The angle of this piece for us to look into our lives and give what God has for us to do. God bless you richly and engrace you. Enjoyed reading this and would to share with others.
